Have a Heart (Shaped Pizza)

EAT, family meals By February 9, 2016 Tags: , , , , , , No Comments

What could possibly be better than spending Valentine’s Day in a fabulous restaurant while also giving to kids’ charities? HEART SHAPED PIZZA!

Yes – it’s back!

On February 14th for one day only (take-out, delivery or the best option – while dining in) at Boston Pizza, small and medium sized gourmet or create-your own pizzas will exude more love than usual. And this love moves farther afield than just the grins and memories your family is creating on Valentine’s Day.

One dollar from every heart-shaped pizza sold on February 14th supports Boston Pizza Foundation Future Prospects, which is committed to connecting kids with role models in their communities to ensure they have a bright future.

Boston Pizza hopes to raise at least $520,000 for Boston Pizza Foundation Future Prospects with the 2016 Valentine’s Day heart-shaped pizza program.

As parents, we know that it takes a committed community to raise a child. Watching my own kids develop, I count our blessings daily. We have health, lots of friends willing to lend a hand, and many ‘Aunt’ or ‘Uncle’ figures that guide and mentor, providing advice and perspectives for situations that arise. We are very lucky, and many children out there have none of the positive influences that have surrounded my family. It’s therefore crucial for me to support Boston Pizza Foundation Future Prospects. The Foundation partners with organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters, JDRF, Kids Help Phone, Live Different, the Rick Hansen Foundation and other programs that mentor kids to reach their full potential.

As well, from now to February 14, patrons can also purchase a Boston Pizza ‘Peel and Win Heart’ for a minimum donation of $2 where everyone will have the chance to win either $2 off dessert, $5 off $25 on Takeout and Delivery, a free starter, Panookie or Flatbread Pizzatizer. They just keep giving!

So make a date with your family at Boston Pizza to review their mail bag filled with school Valentines, and maybe while you’re there you can send a few heart-shaped pizzas to the people who bestow kindness on your family. After all, you can’t send heart-shaped flowers that also pack a punch in the charity department too!

We’re thrilled today to be speaking with Erica Ehm from the YummyMummyClub about an exciting new and relatively historic event that has taken place which she has had a hand in developing. Mattel has been making the Barbie Doll, essentially unchanged, for years. Even through the era of men’s magazine and feminism, not much changed for that classic American icon, Barbie. But today, there’s been an announcement.

Taking My Toddler Outside

LIVE, play By February 8, 2016 No Comments

Ah, the great outdoors! The most wonderful place to explore, interact with nature, enjoy some peace, get some exercise and breathe in the fresh air. I know how important it is to raise children with daily outside experiences, but getting bundled and out there isn’t always as easy to actually do as it is to say.

As multi-tasking moms, often times we put ourselves last on the list. As Teri Hatcher wrote in her best-selling book, Burnt Toast, the matriarch of the family often has a tendency to say, ‘please take the good toast and leave burnt piece for me.’ Everyone else’s needs come first, and ours second.

Our house has a small entryway and so there always seemed to be an overabundance of coats, vests, boots, backpacks and shoes.  Our office, also at the entrance, was looking very cluttered. I can’t even show you a “before” picture; it’s too embarrassing. We are in the process of putting in new floors and converting it into a mudroom/office ourselves. It’s not close to being done yet but I just want to give you a sneak peek at one of the ideas that we had – these beautiful DIY lockers for kids.

Conception and Food: What to Eat and When

Eating a healthy, balanced diet rich in antioxidants and high in nutrients is important, but there is more to it than that – it can boost fertility. Surprisingly, it’s not just what you eat, but when you eat it. Our bodies have different nutritional needs over the course of the month, so it makes sense that there is a link between conception and food.

Knowledge is Power: World Cancer Day

FAM, health, self By February 4, 2016 Tags: , , , 2 Comments

It’s rare when a movie touches a person so deeply that it draws them to tears. Not the kind of tears that are a sympathetic reaction, but tears of the deeply emotional kind. Tears of fear and regret for things that you’ve done or not yet done but regret not doing so. Sometimes a movie just grabs you and makes you think all sorts of what ifs. What if I had just done this? What would happen if I did this right now? Why did I not do this sooner? It was hard to not contemplate these ideas with World Cancer Day at hand.
