A Love Letter To My Post-Baby Body

FAM, health, pregnancy, self By April 14, 2016 Tags: , , No Comments

My friends at MomBabble ran this love letter to my post baby body last year.

Dear Flesh and Bones and Heart that Sustains me,

We were first paired some 31 years ago. Neither of us had any idea what kind of journey we would be on together. I was so excited about you in the beginning. You were magical. You could do no wrong. You carried me everywhere with strong legs. We had adventures and everything was fresh and new.

How I Will Keep My Daughter Beautiful

FAM, health By March 27, 2016 Tags: , , , 3 Comments

I remember that I was carrying my infant daughter, wrapped tightly to me as I wandered through a church bazaar when a voice said, “What a beautiful baby!”

I thought so, of course, but it was nice to hear it from a stranger, so I turned and thanked the person behind the voice. I don’t remember what she looked like, but I want to judge her, in retrospect – in my mind, her perfectly coiffed, single-hue dye job was oversprayed, her skin showed the damage from too many tanning booths and she wore too much expensive, cloying cologne – but I really don’t know. She looked into my baby’s beautiful eyes and returned her bright, cheerful smile – and then looked at me and said “You’re going to keep her thin and pretty, right?”

Immune System Support for Children

baby, EAT, FAM, health, kids By February 29, 2016 Tags: , , , , No Comments

Many parents are asking how to strengthen their child’s immune system this fall, to help prevent catching colds and also the flu.  The immune system is basically a bunch of different types of cells that together fight bacteria and viruses that cause infection.   Many children get sick in the fall as they return to school and daycare where they are exposed to a variety of bugs.  Their immune systems are still growing and developing, so they are more likely to get sick than adults.  There are several factors that can influence how healthy and robust a child’s immune system is.  Follow these steps to boost your child’s immune system and help them stay healthy through this cold and flu season

Tricks for Getting Outside in Crappy Weather

FAM, health By February 18, 2016 Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , No Comments

It can be just as hard to be active outdoors in gross weather as it is to stick to your diet goals during the holidays. The great news is that Gore-Tex has now been invented, and warm inner layers are far more stylish than the long-johns of old. Living in the Pacific Northwest, my family is very lucky to have hiking and ski hills at our doorstep, but getting outside still takes motivation when the weather isn’t co-operating.

How Can I Tell if I have Miscarried?

FAM, health, pregnancy By February 18, 2016 Tags: , , , , , , , 12 Comments

There aren’t many scarier experiences in a woman’s life than when she is thinking she may be having a miscarriage. Statistics tell us that around 50% of pregnancies do end in miscarriages, but most of those women have no idea they were even pregnant in the first place. The majority of miscarriages happen in the first two weeks after conception, and the woman thinks she is just having a slightly heavier menstrual cycle than normal. However, when miscarriage happens further along in the pregnancy it can be truly devastating, especially to those parents who have planned and perhaps waited for years for their baby.  Many women will ask – how can I tell if I have miscarried?

Knowledge is Power: World Cancer Day

FAM, health, self By February 4, 2016 Tags: , , , 2 Comments

It’s rare when a movie touches a person so deeply that it draws them to tears. Not the kind of tears that are a sympathetic reaction, but tears of the deeply emotional kind. Tears of fear and regret for things that you’ve done or not yet done but regret not doing so. Sometimes a movie just grabs you and makes you think all sorts of what ifs. What if I had just done this? What would happen if I did this right now? Why did I not do this sooner? It was hard to not contemplate these ideas with World Cancer Day at hand.

How To Survive A Zombie Apocalypse and More Emergency Preparedness Tips

FAM, health By January 3, 2016 Tags: , , , , , , No Comments
Our world is getting warmer and there are daily weather reminders that we all need to brush up on our emergency preparedness. Most governments state that you should be able to get by for at least 72 hours without power or tap water. A few years ago I used an Amazon credit to purchase water packets, a stove that runs on.. organic material, 60 meals you consume by adding water, escape ladders, water purification pellets and a wind-up radio. Unfortunately all of the stuff is so far buried in my storage room that I wouldn’t be able to find it if I tried!

Getting Outside in the City

Being ‘urban’ has it’s benefits, and yet one of the big drawbacks can mean that you and the kids spend more time in stores, watching screens or commuting than breathing fresh air without a care in the world. The family and I participated in ‘Take Me Outside’ on September 20th, where we were asked to spend an hour outdoors together.
