Orange Noses Are A Good Thing!

baby, FAM By November 8, 2007 No Comments

If your baby has an orange nose – often seen clearly in photographs – you can rest assured it is a good thing that is reversible and harmless. It also appears on the palms of hands and soles of feet and is the result of large quantities of beta carotine in their diet, which can change the pigmentation in their skin. In other words you are doing a good job of giving them healthy and nutritious foods.

Breastfeeding Twins

baby, FAM By November 8, 2007 No Comments

As a first time expectant mother, one of the first feelings I experienced after learning I was carrying twins was a twinge of disappointment that the scene I had been imagining in my head – myself in a darkened room lovingly rocking and nursing my baby – was not to be.  At that point I knew very little about breastfeeding – only that it was beneficial to babies and was therefore something I wanted to do.  I knew even less about breastfeeding twins.  In fact, I assumed that breastfeeding two babies wasn’t really even a possibility.

Choosing A Twin Stroller

baby, FAM By November 5, 2007 No Comments

Selecting a twin stroller is a big decision. If you have one that you are happy with it will make all the difference to your desire to get out and use it. Some advice: you may as well splurge on this purchase. Getting one you are sort of happy with will be a decision you regret when you go back to the store to get the one you really wanted in the first place. In the case of strollers, you really get what you pay for. It helps to remember that the resale value of good strollers is fairly high and it should be easy to sell when the time comes.

Teething

Did you know that teething causes gas? Another side effect is that the baby exhibits cold-like symptoms with runny noses and irritated coughs. It may help (once they are six months old) to feed them cold food, like applesauce to help, or let them suck on half a frozen whole-wheat bagel if they are a bit older.

Pacifiers

Pacifiers work because sucking calms babies. However, you may want to consider some of the downsides to pacifiers. If the baby gets used to having a pacifier, they may not learn how to ‘self-soothe’. Who will be picking that soother off the floor in the middle of the night to return it to baby’s mouth? (Incidentally, this is how I convinced my husband that we wouldn’t be using a soother).

Skin Issues in Babies

baby, FAM By November 5, 2007 No Comments

Irritated skin may be a sign that your baby has sensitive skin. Perhaps your laundry detergent or baby soap is not mild enough and / or your baths are too hot. Maybe your baby is reacting to something in your breast milk or has an intolerance to cow based formula? It is possible that they are sensitive to new foods if you have started feeding them solids. Giving isolated foods for three to five days in a row should help you to pinpoint if it is a new food that is bothering your baby.
