Perfect Tea Biscuits

EAT, family meals By October 19, 2016 1 Comment

When I was a child my Grandmother and Great Aunt would roast a chicken or turkey at least weekly. Any dinner was incomplete without freshly made tea biscuits. The trick with these is instead of using a cookie cutter for shape, they always used the edge of a juice glass to cut the dough. A cookie cutter is fine too, but to this day I still do exactly as they did while smiling the whole time.

The Breville Quick Touch Crisp

eat, GEAR, LIVE, tech By October 18, 2016 1 Comment

Testing a microwave is a tough one for me. I tend to use few features, and when I use my microwave I’m in a rush. Manuals seem unnecessary, and, really, aren’t all microwaves the same? I thought so until now. Breville has come up with a new model called the Quick Touch Crisp that not only does the normal stuff like popcorn and eggs very well, but comes with a crisper pan for use in the actual microwave that gets food crispy on the bottom. No more soggy pizza with burnt cheese on the plate.

Putting Tide purclean to the Test

LIVE, wash By October 17, 2016 1 Comment

You know those days where you step in the dog’s water bowl, break a vase reaching towards an upper shelf and then leave the house with odd socks only to find that your car battery is dead? I was having one of those on Thursday. And also Friday. Tasked with testing Tide purclean – a new formula of laundry detergent, I thought it would be a great idea to wash the largest king-size duvet in the house for the first time. That’s one of those decisions that resembles my typical ‘let’s invent a new recipe for this special dinner party’ debacles.

A Bulletproof Coffee Experiment

LIVE, nourish By October 11, 2016 4 Comments

Since September I’ve been on a health kick. For once, I enrolled myself in activities while I did registrations for the kids. It is time for some overdue self-care. And like my dear Grandmother would have said – if I don’t have an hour a few times a week to take care of my body, then my life is out of whack.  Balancing yoga, barre and Zumba classes have been a delight instead of a chore, and I have been feeling stronger, more toned, and best of all – more positive. Grandmothers are always right.

Let’s Protect Kids from Online Sexual Exploitation

FAM, health By October 5, 2016 No Comments

Usually, when we celebrate anniversaries it’s with balloons and cheers. While this 14 year anniversary is amazing because it has helped so many children, I am sick to my stomach that the service has been necessary that long.

The Canadian Centre for Child Protection is a national charity dedicated to the personal safety and protection of children. I’m shaking as I write this. In addition to the reduction of sexual abuse and exploitation of children, they assist in the location of missing children. The charity also operates Cybertip.ca — Canada’s national tip line to report child sexual abuse and exploitation on the Internet. It also provides other prevention and intervention services to the Canadian public.

Dyson Pure Cool Link

FAM, health By October 3, 2016 1 Comment

One part of parenting that I constantly struggle with is Mom guilt. Household homework discipline isn’t the greatest, school lunches aren’t always balanced and sometimes I cop out by letting the kids watch Pokemon Youtube videos instead of having meaningful conversations. Any technology that can help me feel like I’m doing something right is a winner, but the Dyson Pure Cool Link Desk model is a winner for a whole ton of reasons besides alleviating my guilt.
