Exercise of the week: Plank

Trying to squeeze back in your pre pregnancy jeans can be a struggle for some. I have found the Plank exercise to be very helpful in getting me back into those Jeans this week!

The plank position will also do wonders for your core muscles which in turn will help protect your back from injuries when hauling your groceries into the house.

Priorities Schmiorites

My muscles were so fatigued in the days following my second workout that I couldn’t find the strength to put the fitted sheet onto my mattress. Instead I just threw a flat sheet on top and slept on that. Doing up the snaps on M’s onsie sent twinges of pain up my overworked arms and into my shoulder blades. Even going to the washroom posed a problem. I am now considering just wearing a moo moo everywhere.

Does swaddling help babies sleep better?

baby, FAM By March 1, 2010 Tags: , , , , , , , , 1 Comment

Q – I have a 4.5 month old son, whom I swaddle for all naps and bedtime. He does not sleep for longer than 3 or 4 hour stretches – much to our fatigue/frustration and I am nervous about weaning him out of his swaddle as the lack of sleep is difficult to deal with let alone what it would be like to have him swaddle-free (He is able to free himself of the swaddle most times when he wakes up and is left for a bit in his crib). I tried going without the swaddle for 2 naps and he kept himself up and cranky by grinding his hands into his eyes. I am nervous that I might be affecting his development as he does not roll over yet etc. Is there a maximum recommended age for swaddling and if you are weaning from the swaddle, is there a recommended process? Any help would be much appreciated – thanks!

ex_barbie_workoutDoes Barbie ever get winded?

“I think I am going to puke”

Did I say this?

a)     5 minutes into the workout
b)    15 minutes into the workout
c)     50 minutes into the workout

If you said b you are correct. I said “be right back” to my trainer, Stuart, as I wobbled to my patio door, opened it as wide as I could to breathe in the cold air in hopes of settling my nauseous stomach.

fitness for new momsI’ve been a little blasé about the 2010 Olympics coming to Vancouver but as time has ticked on, I’m a little upset with myself that I couldn’t have been more excited from the beginning.  It was opening ceremonies tonight, and because my rabbit ears didn’t pick up the Official Olympic channel we decided to watch it live on the computer. My whole family was snuggled on the couch watching a small screen as athletes poured into the stadium. Teams of over 150, and teams of just 1, and I sat there trying to imagine what they must be feeling.

Cell Phones in the Car

Driving while talking or texting on a cell phone is now illegal in many Canadian provinces.  If you a) haven’t figured out your Bluetooth (or never remember to charge the batteries), or b) can’t seem to get off the phone in the car, we’ll give you a few options.  Urbanmommies spoke with Corporal Dale Somerville of the RCMP, who verified a few points for us as stated in section 214.1 of the Motor Vehicle Act.   Holding and talking on a mobile device while driving will now cost you $167.  Texting or emailing while holding a mobile device will cost you $167, plus 2 points off of your license.  Hands-free devices are allowed provided you only touch one button on the earpiece in order to answer or dial.  Ouch.  For busy moms who are used to returning calls in the car… what do you do?

Kids in the Car

Are we there yet? Driving on Car Trips with children and babies can test your patience level like almost nothing else. You’ve got crumbs and juice boxes all over the back seat, you can’t find the plug for the DVD player, and if you do one more diaper change in the trunk you will turn the car around and head home. (And it took an hour to pack the trunk).  Breathe. Try to think of it as an experience. Here are the UrbanMommies tips..
