There’s no better way to chase away a chill than sipping on a hot beverage. That’s why I was so happy to find a cherished, family recipe in one of my grandmother’s collectable tins a few years ago. Loved by all, her rich and creamy decadent crockpot hot chocolate brought smiles to faces. No boxed hot cocoa can compare to the taste of this sweet, yet smooth treat. And kids love it! I loved it as a child.
Back in the day, I remember my grandmother whipping up this delicious indulgence in an old olive-green Rival Crock Pot with the onion border around the bottom. This glorious, high-tech (at the time) kitchen appliance symbolized warmth, comfort, and the best way to end a day of outdoor fun. I couldn’t wait to run indoors and grab a mug along with a few of her homemade cookies. There were always homemade goodies ready to eat.
We used to sit together next to the fireplace and talk about stories from her childhood, sipping away. All was right in the world and many memories were made enjoying that Rich and Creamy Crock Pot Hot Chocolate.
She used milk from the farm next door, which made it incredibly rich and thick. Yielding on the side of caution, I like to use heavy cream and milk that has been pasteurized and not treated with any chemicals.
I also make mine with semi-sweet chocolate chips, but I’m sure it’s just as good with milk chocolate or even white chocolate chips for something uniquely different. Any milky liquid can be used, so feel free to experiment with almond, soy, or rice milk. You could also omit the sweetened condensed milk (just compensate with more milk or other liquid), and add some honey, maple syrup, or agave nectar. Top with cinnamon, marshmallows, shaved chocolate, or whipped cream!
This easy homemade crock pot recipe will satisfy your craving for chocolate while warming you up!
